Mozart learned voraciously from others, and developed a brilliance and maturity of style that encompassed the light and graceful along with the dark and passionate. His influence on subsequent Western art music is profound. Beethoven wrote his own early compositions in the shadow of Mozart, and Joseph Haydn wrote that "posterity will not see such a talent again in 100 years."

Pollock's most famous paintings were made during the "drip period" between 1947 and 1950. He rocketed to popular status following an August 8, 1949 four-page spread in Life magazine that asked, "Is he the greatest living painter in the United States?" At the peak of his fame, Pollock abruptly abandoned the drip style.

He often contributed to the scripts of his films, under unusual pseudonyms such as "Otis Criblecoblis", which contains an embedded homophone for "scribble"; and "Mahatma Kane Jeeves", a play on mahatma and on a phrase an aristocrat might use when about to leave the house: "My hat, my cane, Jeeves." In other features he is reported to have written or improvised more or less all of his own dialogue and material, leaving story structure to other writers.

A recent acquisition of our growing vintage department, these vintage Harley Davidson engineer boots represent a timeless work and motorcycle wear -inspired style. Paired best with a sturdy pair of selvedge denim (not to mention a beat up vintage leather jacket), these boots are as fierce as they are comfortable.

Engineer boots are designed to protect the wearer from injury to the foot and leg: for motorcycle riders, in the case of an accident while riding and to prevent burns of the rider's legs and feet from the heat of the motorcycle parts while riding. Engineer boots typically have an adjustable leather strap across the ankle as well as an adjustable leather strap at the top of the shaft to adjust the fit.

Though also a quintessential work boot, the engineer boot is a great all-purpose utility boot as well - ready for heavy labor, fast bike rides, or as an extension of your particularly rugged outlook on footwear and personal style.

BACK IN BLACK: ULRICH LANG

Back in the Blackbird Apothecary in The Field House are the three completely unique Ulrich Lang scents Anvers, Anvers 2, and Nightscape. It's no suprise that these fragrances sell out so quickly. Lang's take on the modern man's identity via the sense of smell is as daring as it is successful.

Ulrich Lang is a relatively new perfumer with his first scent, Anvers appearing in 2003. Originally located in Germany, Lang felt inclined to transplant to New York where he works currently. Coming from a background in cosmetics, he was well-prepared for work in fragrance when he decided to make the plunge, and his experience shines through the three scents that we carry. Each Ulrich Lang scent is surprisingly unique, versatile, and striking, with special care given to evoke sentiments of a considered, sophisticated future. BLACKBIRD EATS: SNOUT & CO.

The first time I discovered the infamous Snout & Co. truck, parked close by Blackbird in Ballard, I was in too much of a hurry. I had heard about them from a friend and was duly warned just how good their food is. I was busy on an errand and told myself I'd return for an order on my way back but got too caught up in the task at hand to remember about them.

A couple of weeks went by, and, while on yet another errand, I spotted the truck again. This time I was ravenous and past ready for lunch. I took a quick look at their menu, perusing the sides and mains until I came upon a sign that had been taped to the bottom of the menu. It described the daily special, the "Carolina Plate" that included a South Carolina-style pork sandwich with cracked coriander apple slaw, collard greens, and mac and cheese. At $10 it was clearly the best deal and my saliva glands were already working overtime at the prospect of the scarfing.

I checked to see what time they were heading out was and it turned out to be in a scant ten minutes. I placed my order for the Carolina Plate which garnered a knowing smile and head nod from the cooks, as though I were somehow in the know. I told them I'd be right back as I had to run to the post office three blocks away. My hunger hoofed me hastily and pretty soon I was back, out of breath, money in hand, and stomach screaming.

I must say it was some beyond good barbeque. The pork was moist and spicy (each sandwich comes with a choice of ancho-ginger or habanero honey), the collards were smoky and delicious and the mac and cheese tied it all together with a down right god-damned tastiness rarely equaled in the Seattle's barbeque circles. Tuesdays they are in Ballard down at NW Market St & Tallman Ave NW (by Ballard Blossom) from 11-3. I highly recommend checking them out if you haven't already. If Ballard is out of your way, check out their website for other Seattle spots they are known to frequent. You simply will not be disappointed.

Diptyque scented candles are a fifty year old legend that delivers a unique mystique and luxurious aroma to those able to procure it. Two stellar examples of this painstaking craft of candle making that has helped make Diptyque known the world over are the Figuier and Chene candles that we have just had a restock of at The Field House. Diptyque began as a small boutique, founded by three friends and artists who shared a passion for creativity and design. In 1961, they opened a shop at 34 boulevard Saint-Germain to showcase their avant-garde fabric designs and decorative items from their travels. The trio offered colored candles to match their fabrics, adding perfumed wax, and soon their customers fell in love with the inimitable fragrances. Word traveled and their cachet grew. In 1963, they introduced the first Diptyque scented candle. In 1968, the first line of fragrances was launched. Today, the three Parisian artists are world-renowned purveyors of fragrance and scented candles, as well as personal care products.

This song, from a weird one-off covers album, is as strange and original as Young himself. The album was done to please his label, Geffen Records, who had rejected his "Old Ways" album, demanding a 'rock and roll record'. Young responded with this lp that featured "Wonderin'" as its lead single. Geffen records had a conniption fit at the lp and ended up suing Young for literally not sounding Neil Young enough. Young counter-sued and won a public apology from David Geffen and a promise not to meddle anymore. Below, Young pretends to rock with a set of gag teeth firmly in cheek...

We've been foraging again high and low for vintage and have a whole new batch of vintage leather jackets from our travels. One of the things we love best about these beat up rugged statements of pure vicious cool are all the brilliantly functional details each one has. From brand to brand, era to era, style to style, all of these details change a little bit. Added to these personalizing design qualities are the occasional customized bits that owners are sometimes want to decorate their second skins with. The whole effect creates completely unique pieces of outerwear that are built to last a lifetime and look timelessly and effortlessly righteous. Blackbird Vintage - 1980's Cafe Racer Leather Jacket

DETAILS: This jacket is an unmarked brand black 'cafe racer' style leather jacket. It is approximately from the mid to late 80's or early 90's. It is marked a size 40 and has a black polyester lining. The zipper brand is YKK and all zippers work perfectly. The inside left and right sides of the main zipper have stash pockets and there are silver snap studs on the outside of the inner wrists (we have no idea what these were for, but they look pretty cool). It measures 21" from armpit to armpit, 19.5" across the bottom, and 26" from the top of the back collar to the bottom. This jacket is nice and broken in so it is soft yet very sturdy and ready for another decade or two of use.

DETAILS: This jacket is a 'First' brand black leather jacket. It is approximately from the mid to late 80's or early 90's. It is marked a size 42 and has a black polyester lining. The zipper brand is YKK and all zippers work perfectly. It measures 22" from armpit to armpit, 19" across the bottom, and 27" from the top of the back collar to the bottom. This jacket has a very punk rock/heavy metal look to it, not unlike the Ramones or the Sex Pistols.

It measures 21" from armpit to armpit, 21" across the bottom, and 26" from the top of the back collar to the bottom. This jacket is has that rad punk/metal look just like its little brother (the "First" jacket that is listed just above it).

DETAILS: This jacket is a 'Harley Davidson AMF' brand black leather MC jacket. It dates specifically to the years between 1968 and 1981 (AMF's period of ownership of Harley Davidson). It is marked a size 40 (though the cropped cut makes if fit smaller) and has a quilted polyester lining. The zipper brand is Lenzip and all zippers work perfectly. It measures 20" from armpit to armpit, 18" across the bottom, and 24" from the top of the back collar to the bottom. The stitching along the inside side of the left chest pocket needs restitching (about 3" worth) but is currently secured in place with a silver safety pin.

Many of you may know our amazing Ballard Mexican restaurant, La Carta De Oaxaca. Working so close to such an amazing eatery definitely has its perks. So it was with great anticipation that I went to check out their newest location, Mezcaleria Oaxaca up in Queen Anne. Upon entering, you feel a similar vibe to La Carta, but the ambiance is a little more homey and intimate. The first thing you see past the front door is the large, looming bar, boasting a full selection of the finest Mezcals from Oaxaca and the rest of Mexico, as well as anything else one might need to wet their whistle.

The dining room is in the rear of the building and is compact compared to the Ballard restaurant, but the wait, even on a bustling late Friday night was less than 10 minutes. The decor is very similar to La Carta and a plethora pictures, some back-lit in box frames, decorated much of the wall space. Both my date and I hastily ordered Micheladas that were served just as cold and spicy as we had hoped. Both tables to the right and left of us inquired about our beverage choices and after we gave up the low down, the table to the right ordered five of them.

Our appetites weren't at their fullest after a hearty late lunch, so we simply ordered the chips with bean dip (extremely highly recommended), the tacos dorados, and a bowl of pozole. The chips were served warm and salty (a must for me) and the bean dip was a standout, being a creamy refried bean concoction served with cotija cheese on top and piping hot. The tacos dorados came soon after and were the perfect small meal - three rolled tacos stuffed with pulled pork and pineapple in a spicy barbeque sauce and topped with crema fresca, and cotija cheese and served with black beans and guacamole. The posole, actually a pre-Columbian staple of the Aztecs, was a filling brew of hominy, pork, fresh veggies and tangy spices and arrived with a plate of fresh corn tortillas in tow that tasted like they were made minutes before.

Luckily for us, Mezcaleria is within walking distance of our apartment (just barely, but the long jaunt justifies many visits with its great calorie burn) and as a result, the next visit will most definitely be soonish. If you're a fan of La Carta, you'll absolutely love it's new Queen Anne cousin. And I have a suggestion for the owners - give me a complimentary Michelada every time I visit, and I'll make sure I get at least one other table to buy a round of them...

This new fragrance opens like a slap in the face with what initially smells like brown packing tape. One is captured by this seemingly strange smell and immediately transported to an alternate reality as could only be conceived by Comme. On second whiff, brown packing tape has never before smelled so irresistible and haunting. Reminiscent in some ways of Robert Piguet's famous chypre, Bandit, CDG EDP holds onto a synthetic leather note through all stages of dry-down.

What we find even more wonderful than this unbelievably addictive chemical, toxic tone are the more subtle facets that diversify the blend. Hawthorns and lilac provide both a soft floral and leafy green backdrop which help accent the perfume with a gentler and more complex edge and contrast. The styrax and then musk at the base, which adds a powder-like tinge, along with renowned Comme aldehydes and safraleine (reminiscent of both leather and saffron), act like a shot of steroids injected into the olfactory's vantage point of the fragrance on the skin. You back your head away for a rest, but dive back to continue the search of just what the hell powers this potent bouquet of enigmatic intoxication.

We began by saying that you must smell this perfume to understand its scent because, while packing tape is an excellent starting point to describe it, there's so much more going on. The way the fragrance plays on each person's skin is so dynamic, so intensely personal that none of the words provided so far do the juice its due justice. This is a perfume we will be wearing, smelling, and advocating for all occasions for an indefinite amount of time. Possibly forever.

The venerable French candlemakers, Cire Trudon have been around longer than any other candle manufacturer (for you history buffs, Cire Trudon began when the Thirty Year's War was still going strong. Born in 1643, Cire Trudon is the oldest wax manufacturer still operating. Many of you know Tyler Johnson from his long tenure at Blackbird. What many may not know about him is his hobby, profession, obsession, and side business, SKYLMT. The company manufactures bike parts and accessories and was started this past year with his friends Corbin Dahl and Colby Elrick.

Tyler is always coming in with bruises, cuts, limps, and other maladies and until you realize that Tyler spends most of his down time riding the way he rides, you start thinking he's just some accident prone goof ball.

Blackbird Vintage - Vintage 70's 'Bolme' Bomber Jacket

DETAILS: This jacket is an 'Bolme' brand black leather jacket that was made in the U.S.A. It is approximately from the mid to late 70's or early 80's. It is marked a size M and has a polyester faux-fur collar and lining and banded 'bomber' style waistband and cuffs. The zipper brand is YKK and all zippers work perfectly. It has a couple custom repairs that have been fixed with safety pins (see picture for right pocket repair). The bottom front is more 'worn' that the rest of the jacket (we think this makes it look particulary rad).

The framed photo collection from Blackbird stems from our obsession with vintage photographs. We have been collecting them for quite some time now and have narrowed down a small selection for this first series that we now offer you for your home.

Before the days of instant camera phone photography, the "snap-shot" was a memory captured, and then later reminisced about once the photographs were developed, days, months, even years later, making the act of recording life's moments that much more special. The images we have painstakingly chosen represent themes of photographic silence. Simultaneously something violent and quiet. The beauty of the billowing black clouds in Smoke 1, 2, and 3 are in juxtaposition to the sometimes hard trials and error of flight testing way back when.
